چکیده

Models of relativistic jets filled with ultrarelativistic pair plasma have turned out to be very suitable to explain the broadband radiation of γ-ray blazars. Given the initial injection and cooling of ultrarelativistic pair plasma in an AGN jet has occurred, producing the observed high-energy γ-ray radiation, we investigate the further evolution of the pair plasma as it continues to move out from the central engine. The effects of thermalization and of the emission of pair bremsstrahlung and annihilation radiation are discussed, and a model for MeV blazars is presented. A model calculation to the special case of PKS 0208-512 is presented. Subject headings: acceleration of particles — plasmas — radiation mechanisms: non-thermal — radiation mechanisms: thermal — radiative transfer — galaxies: jets — gamma-rays: theory – 3 –

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Effect of Plasma Composition on the Interpretation of Faraday Rotation

Faraday rotation (FR) is widely used to infer the orientation and strength of magnetic fields in astrophysical plasmas. Although the absence of electron-positron pairs is a plausible assumption in many astrophysical environments, the magnetospheres of pulsars and black holes and their associated jets may involve a significant pair plasma fraction. This motivates being mindful of the effect of p...

γ-ray emission and spectral evolution of pair plasmas in AGN jets I. General theory and a prediction for the GeV – TeV emission from ultrarelativistic jets

The evolution of the particle distribution functions inside a relativistic jet containing an e−-e+pair plasma and of the resulting γ-ray and X-ray spectra is investigated. The first phase of this evolution is governed by heavy radiative energy losses. For this phase, approximative expressions for the energy-loss rates due to inverse-Compton scattering, using the full KleinNishina cross section,...

Propagation Effects in Magnetized Transrelativistic Plasmas

The transfer of polarized radiation in magnetized and non-magnetized relativistic plasmas is an area of research with numerous flaws and gaps. The present paper is aimed at filling some gaps and eliminating the flaws. Starting from a Trubnikov’s linear response tensor for a vacuum wave with k = ω/c in thermal plasma, the analytic expression for the dielectric tensor is found in the limit of hig...

Plans for the creation and studies of electron–positron plasmas in a stellarator

Electron–positron plasmas are unique in their behavior due to the mass symmetry. Strongly magnetized electron–positron, or pair, plasmas are present in a number of astrophysical settings, such as astrophysical jets, but they have not yet been created in the laboratory. Plans for the creation and diagnosis of pair plasmas in a stellarator are presented, based on extrapolation of the results from...
